The Finger Lime (Citrus australasica) is an Australian native citrus that produces fruit with caviar-like pulp in bright colours.

Flowers are produced in summer and autumn followed by the elongated fruit shaped like stumpy fingers. Fruits can be green, yellow, pink or bright red and are full of tiny beads filled with tangy citrus juice. The plant can grow up to 6m high but respond beautifully to trimming to keep them compact and manageable.

General Finger Lime Information

Select finger lime varieties that thrive in your specific area and soil conditions. Some popular cultivars include “Australian Red Center,” “Rainforest Pearl,” and “Alstonville.”

Plant in a sunny location

Finger limes need plenty of sunlight. Choose a spot in your garden or yard that receives full sun. The soil should be well-drained and slightly acidic (pH 5–6.5).

Prepare the soil

Enrich the soil with organic matter such as compost and well-rotted manure. This will improve soil structure and provide essential nutrients for healthy growth.

Watering

Water finger lime trees regularly during the early stages of growth. Once established, reduce watering frequency. Finger limes are quite drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture is essential during the fruit development.

Fertilize

Apply suitable slow-release fertilisers three times a year. Use a fertiliser with low nitrogen levels to encourage flowering and fruiting rather than foliage growth.

Protection

Protect your finger lime tree from frosts, pests, and diseases. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and prevent weeds.

Container gardening

If you have limited space, consider growing finger limes in containers. Use a premium quality mix and provide adequate sunlight.

Monitor your finger lime tree closely and adjust care practices as required. You will enjoy harvesting and feasting upon these unique citrus delights as the fruits mature.
